My Reactions
My initial reaction when I viewed this artwork was the typical one among the people who first look at a Wayne Thiebaud pastry painting. I started to crave for some delicious pastry and sweets immediately! I had the urge to lick or taste the pictures as they look highly detailed and real. Thiebaud used heavy pigments and smudges effectively in this example as it makes the frosting of the cake look very factual and authentic. The use of shadows also creates a three dimensional appearance to the cakes which results in giving even more reasons for viewers to distinguish the cakes in the painting as real life objects.

Furthermore the technique of involving shadows in the artwork also gave me the temptation of reaching out to taste or lick the cakes in the image as they seemed to pop out of the page.
