Influences
As a young child Wayne Thiebaud worked in restaurants, thus one can reference that his iconic paintings of pastries transpired from his influence in the restaurant industry. In addition he worked on stage sets for theater productions, hence this experience with stage lighting gave him the idea of using bright light techniques in his paintings. His paintings of cakes, pastries, pies, candy, gumball machines, and deli machines resulted from his boyhood memories of American during the Great Depression era.

Thiebaud was also deeply involved in the study of topography, which then lead him to paint his first major artwork in San Francisco based on landscapes, as well as geographical characteristics of the bay area. He has mentioned that his paintings based on topography were influenced by the work of Richard Diebenkorn. Lastly his interest in art was initially inspired by cartoons and comic strips.
